Another Amazing CMS That’s Free

typo 3 cms at http://www.typo3.org/

Yes fair reader, Typo is extremely feature packed and looks at the onset like a cms for enterprise development. The lucky thing is the documentation, and there is loads of it, is all resident in the backend, which means quick accessibility to clear descriptions of it’s implementation. I am just sifting through and noticed that a fair amount of permissions structure is part of the schema. More on this later. The templates that come with typo for its overall look however, are pretty lame in conception, but most users are likely to just integrate their own customizations, which if you know what you are doing, can result in excellent output.

One of the difficulties I have experienced with php based cms systems is the integration of flash or audio media. Depending on how the php engine creates navigation in order to result in a "friendly" looking URL, this can result in a lack of flash operability. With Textpattern for example, under Apache, the application makes use of the module ForceType application/x-httpd-php which forces specific operations to parse an .htaccess file for directions to files. Along with default text files acting as placeholders for section navigation, this results in a clean or friendly URL. The downside is php attempts to parse all files, with varying results. Since flash files are binary, there is no protocol to direct php in parsing the flash .swf file, resulting in nothing but a blank placeholder. One hack which I haven’t successfully installed is flash satay, which uses directives to guide the application in it’s treatment of this binary data. Therefor, one my first experiments will be to attempt flash integration within typo.
